  9.  AB    OBJECTIVE: To monitor the trend of HIV infection in various population
  10.        groups in Nigeria. METHOD: A protocol was designed for HIV/STD sentinel
  11.        serosurveillance in Nigeria. The survey, carried out over a period of
  12.        two months in 17 states among ANC clinic attenders, STD patients CSWS
  13.        and TB patients. HIV seropositivity was defined as consistent positivity
  14.        to wellcozyme 1 & 2 & HIV-Check 1 + 2. RESULTS: The survey demonstrated
  15.        a rising seroprevalence of HIV in this African Country where the
  16.        epidemic was only first officially recognised in 1986.
  17.        DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION: In the absence of a reliable Health information
  18.        system such as operates in this country, a well designed and
  19.        complemented sentinel HIV serosurveillance serves a good purpose for
  20.        monitoring the rate of infection and the design of intervention
  21.        programmes.
