AB OBJECTIVE: To monitor the trend of HIV infection in various population
groups in Nigeria. METHOD: A protocol was designed for HIV/STD sentinel
serosurveillance in Nigeria. The survey, carried out over a period of
two months in 17 states among ANC clinic attenders, STD patients CSWS
and TB patients. HIV seropositivity was defined as consistent positivity
to wellcozyme 1 & 2 & HIV-Check 1 + 2. RESULTS: The survey demonstrated
a rising seroprevalence of HIV in this African Country where the
epidemic was only first officially recognised in 1986.
DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION: In the absence of a reliable Health information
system such as operates in this country, a well designed and
complemented sentinel HIV serosurveillance serves a good purpose for
monitoring the rate of infection and the design of intervention
programmes.
